DIs = Daily Intakes

A Daily Intake is the suggested intake of nutrients an average adult body needs to be healthy. So what are these nutrients we talk about? Well the key ones are protein, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrate, sugars and sodium. You’ve probably glazed over these countless times on the side of food packs. How much of the stuff you need on a daily basis varies depending on how active you are. The more active, the more energy you need, and vice versa. Kids need less energy than adults.

RDIs = Recommended Daily Intakes

This is the amount that has been set by the National Medical Research Council (NHMRC). It’s based on levels that most healthy people will need of certain nutrients, vitamins and minerals. If you want to know what’s right for you, please visit www.nhmrc.gov.au

AIs = Adequate Intakes

Adequate Intake values are used when there’s not enough info to make a Recommended Daily Intake (RDI). It’s purely a guideline for “Mr and Mrs Average” to know how much stuff will make them healthy.

When referring to the nutrition thumbnails that are on the front of some packs though… be aware that these values are based on an adult males diet and will not accurately reflect a woman's or child's dietary requirements.
